M12. Blacks. Colored Mariners in Ports of South Carolina. House of Representatives Number 119. Washington: 1842. 18 pp. Very good. Removed. This report describes the offense that the British Government and others took with a South Carolina law that called for imprisonment of free black sailors in the ports of South Carolina. The free blacks were to be held in prison until the ships were ready to sail and were to be released only when the expenses for the costs of the imprisonment were paid by the ship’s captain. $100.00.

F4. Native Americans. Two A.L.S. from Joseph Fish (1705-1781) who served as a missionary to the Narragansett Indians in Rhode Island and was also a minister in Stonington Connecticut. This lot includes a 1766 letter on the loss of Fish’s daughter written to Eleazer Wheelock. A second letter requests that books be provided for the Indian children at Niantic (Niantic?). The Niantic had a small reservation in what is now East Lyme, Connecticut. $1250.00.
