[4] pp. 3 pages of text describe various pieces of furniture that were on display. A good and rare item related to one of the first Shaker exhibits. (R1854) $75.00.
SV10. Dow, Edward. A Portrait of the Millennial Church of Shakers. Orono: University Press, 1931. 52 pp. Very good in paper wraps. An early attempt to write a basic history of the Shakers. This publication was poorly researched and it is clear that the author did not visit with any of the then extant communities. A scarce piece. (R2061) $15.00.

SV17. Dickens, Charles. American Notes For General Circulation. Leipzig: Bernh. Tauchnitz, 1842. 310 pp. A rare and early edition of this Dickens work. A sweet copy bound ½ leather with marbled paper boards. Interior foxed. Dickens’ offers one of the most memorable visitor’s accounts to New Lebanon writing “we walked into a grim room, where several grim hats were hanging on grim pegs, and the time was grimly told by a grim clock…” Dickens’ described the Shakers in detail for a few pages and grudgingly admits that they were thrifty and good businessmen but he still did not like them. $95.00.

Wiggin new the Alfred Shakers very well and this story does a good job of capturing Shaker life in the late 19th Century. (R2922) $25.00.

SV73. “A Gentleman Travelling in the Interior…” in the Democratic Clarion, June 26, 1843. 11” article briefly describing a visit of a traveler to Enfield (N.H.?) and then reprints the Table Monitor. Fair condition. Separating along a fold. $15.00.

SV75. [Enfield, Ct.]. “Notes of Eastern Travel,” in The
Geauga Republican, October 22 & 29, 1873. 2 complete issues removed from bound
volume. The paper reprints two letters from an Ohio person who describes going
back to his childhood home in Connecticut. Includes a description of meeting Sr.
Elsa Parsons at Enfield. The author may be a former Shaker or at least has
family who are Shakers. The writer concludes “that their religion consists of
money making. They are Shrewd and calculating… A Cousin of mine lost $3,000 by
them, trying to get his rights.” $25.00.
