Who Are These Guys, Anyway?

Scott De Wolfe was raised in Massachusetts. He attended Northland College in Wisconsin receiving a degree in anthropology. He later earned a Masters Degree in American Studies at the University of Maine. Scott has worked in the museum field for the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Community and as curator of the Fairbanks house. In 1989, he began a business that specialized in Shaker books, ephemera, photographica, and manuscripts. He is our Shaker expert. He spends most of his time quoting his Shaker items to various customers and also listing items on eBay. Scott and his wife Beth reside in Alfred.

Frank Wood was born in Maine and graduated from the University of Southern Maine with a degree in English. Frank was a member of the Maine Legislature and eventually became the State Purchasing Agent. He also worked at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Community. Frank started selling used and rare books part-time in the 1970's before going into the business full-time in 1991. He can often be found reading through old newspapers for articles (from caves to Mormons!) that he quotes to customers. He also enjoys traveling the country on buying trips and always manages to come back with rare treasures! Frank is the father of two and lives in Saco.

You can find Brandy (shown here with her son J.J.) doing just about anything- from changing a light bulb to updating our website. She spends most of her time processing the many daily book orders and listing items on eBay. She also makes sure that all orders are shipped the morning after they are received. Her favorite project? Keeping the shop organized! Which, if you have ever visited us, is no easy task! It seems as soon as we organize one corner, there are books piled up in another! Brandy, her husband and two children live in Berwick.

Meet the busiest member of De Wolfe and Wood: Jennie. She is a stray that Scott discovered living underneath our barn a few winters ago and adopted. She can be found in the front windows early in the morning waiting for Scott to arrive with breakfast and afterwards anywhere there is a warm ray of sun shining or in an empty box. She is quite an avid squirrel hunter and loves all the attention she receives from our daily visitors.

Scott and Frank began doing shows together in 1990. Their varied interests and strengths made a great partnership. When the building in Alfred became available, they decided to rent it together and see how it would go. De Wolfe & Wood opened its doors for the first time during a snow storm on April Fool's Day in 1992. Many years later, they now own this wonderful building and have filled it with over 100,000 books, thousands of post cards, and countless paper items. They welcome your visit to their unique store.
